Abstract

Managing Project Risk with 3D Laser Scanning
Track: Technology
Authors: Lisa Henstridge, Bernie McInally

In today's competitive market, the need to develop new and innovative methods that expedite project delivery schedules, reduce overall project costs while maintaining data accuracy has increased. 3D laser scanning and mapping is rapidly becoming a survey tool of choice for the delivery of highly accurate and detailed 3D design survey data for mapping, design, digital terrain models and machine control applications.

3D laser scanning survey systems are not only a tool which can provide quality design survey data, but can also provide support in the overall management of a project. These systems have proven effective in constructability reviews, resolving quantity disputes, assisting in asset management, monitoring and inspection and creating pre- and post- construction as-built conditions for road, rail, airport and water projects.

Through real life case studies, this presentation will discuss the application of 3D laser scanning surveys; how it can facilitate project delivery schedules, promote cost effective data management, maintain accuracy and quality, and reduce risk and control costs.
