Electronic Aeronautical Surveys (eALP) - FAA Airport GIS Initiative
Track: Technology
Authors: Aaron Norby
The FAA has developed new requirements for Surveys at airports as part of the NextGen. NextGen represents a complete change from a ground-based system of air traffic control to a GPS-based system of approach procedures. This change is vital to meet future demands, and to provide safety critical information at our nation's airports. In support of NextGen, the FAA has developed the Airport Geographic Information System (AGIS). In addition, the FAA has issued three Advisory Circulars (AC's) to provide requirements for Geodetic Survey (AC-16), Imagery (AC-17B), and GIS data collection (AC-18B) for submission of aeronautical data for an Electronic Aairport Aeronautical (eALP) survey. The eALP will be discussed with requirements for survey, photogrammetry, and GIS data submission through the AGIS Internet site of the FAA. This presentation will combine geodetic surveying, imagery, and GIS data collection all in one discussion as it relates to eALP's. Demonstrations of airspace obstruction analysis with Esri ArcGIS and 3D Analyst will also be shown as part of the discussion.
