Abstract
PLS & GISP - Effective Collaboration for the Geospatial Industry
Track: Surveying
Authors: Coleen Johnson, Keri Brennan
The greater the cooperation and teamwork amongst the professional surveyor and the GIS professional (as well as input from other stakeholders), throughout the planning of, the development of, the updating of and the maintenance of a Geographic Information System (GIS), the greater the likelihood the system will truly benefit all of the end-users and stakeholders. This collaboration is also crucial when it comes to 1) developing a "best practices" guide for incorporating survey data into GIS datasets; 2) providing cross- disciplinary professional training and education for surveying and GIS professionals; and 3) imparting information to others while serving as consultants/liaisons to the geospatial community. This presentation will highlight efforts that are currently underway in working together to develop the mentioned "best practices" guideline to establish clearer roles and responsibilities of the two disciplines and will include interactive discussions on what this guideline should encompass. The presentation will also provide attendees the status of our efforts to jointly establish educational workshops to provide cross-disciplinary training for the benefit of all geospatial professionals. We will also seek audience participation regarding specific ideas and thoughts for these and future initiatives for effective collaboration between the GIS professional and the profession surveyor.
