Developing Partnerships to Help Youth Understand and Appreciate Community Attributes
Track: Community Projects and Partnerships
Author(s): Susan Hayden

Monroe County 4-H GIS Club members have completed several GIS/GPS projects ranging from mapping walking trails and interpretive signs through a nature preserve, to mapping local parks and cataloging park facilities, to mapping local historic sites and documenting the significance of those sites. In carrying out these projects, partnerships have been established with a number of agencies and organizations such as local school districts, the County GIS Agency, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Soil and Water Conservation District, the Regional Office of Education and the Monroe County Historical Society. This session will show how youth have come to recognize and appreciate community resources and features, and the opportunity local youth have had to meet and work with agency personnel, and gain a better understanding of the services community agencies and organizations provide. In addition, these partnerships have opened doors to new project opportunities for members of Monroe County 4-H GIS Club.
