Locating Habitat for the Texas Trailing Phlox Using Satellite Imagery and Ancillary Data in a GIS Author: Steven Schwelling Texas Parks & Wildlife Phone: 512-389-8063 Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has recently undertaken an effort to apply advanced geospatial technologies for identifying endangered species habitat. This paper describes a pilot project to test an automated approach for locating the remaining habitat of the Texas trailing phlox, one of 24 plant species currently listed as endangered in Texas. Successful implementation of a GIS for locating such habitat is expected to accelerate the time frame for protecting and restoring endangered species habitat and lower the costs associated with such conservation efforts. |
