The Graphics and Engineering Division (GEMB) at the City of Houston manages and maintains the GIS database of the wastewater, storm, and water utility systems for the Public Works Department. The GEMB has a GIS enterprise system that allows for viewing, querying, and plotting maps, and updating the GIS layers of the utility system. Access to the system is granted using request forms and is open to the public through one workstation. With the increasing popularity of the system, the GEMB manager decided to provide access to the GIS maps through the Internet. Therefore, a Web site was designed to allow everybody to view the utility maps on the World Wide Web. The system is implemented using MapObjects 2, Visual Basic 6.0, and MapObjects Internet Map Server (IMS). The Web site provides several query methods, such as address matching, to locate places on the map. Also it has a set of HTML pages designed to assist the user in using the system and understanding the map symbology.
