Because a substantial amount of GIS users are still running UNIX servers and as the Internet becomes more vulnerable to compromises in security, some tools have recently become available to add a higher degree of security to UNIX client/server environments. This paper discusses the use of one of these tools, the secure shell (ssh). Discussion includes installation and running of the ssh daemon, as well as the use of Windows and UNIX ssh clients.
