The curve number is a hydrologic parameter used to describe storm water runoff potential for drainage areas. The curve number is a function of land use, soil type, and soil moisture. Curve number estimation involves area-weighting land use and soil types, which can be time-consuming and labor intensive. An ArcView GIS extension was developed to automate this process. The user provides digital drainage areas, land use and soil maps, and lookup tables to facilitate computations. The extension prompts the user for file names and field names. The input data is then checked for format and completeness and notifies the user of any errors prior to calculation. Lastly, the extension calculates curve numbers, as well as impervious area coverage.
