Abstract

Paper
GIS Assessment of Remaining Coal Resources with High Market Potential
Track: Mining and Geosciences
Author(s): William Watson

U.S. coal production is concentrated in specific coal beds that have low mining cost and low sulfur content, which are major determinants of marketable coal. To study economic prospects at the coal bed level, the U.S. Energy Information Administration and the U.S. Geological Survey have developed an analytic system that uses ArcView and Arc___ Spatial Analyst to combine detailed geologic data, coal mining cost engineering models, and geostatistics. The data, models, and a GIS users guide are being made available to the resource analysis community. This paper describes the system in the context of an application to the Pittsburgh coal bed.
