Delivering World Class Service: Integrating GIS and Municipal Asset Management
Track: Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater
Author(s): Stephen Sherman

A municipality's ability to maintain and enhance its infrastructure directly impacts a community's quality of life. Realizing this, the City of Greensboro, North Carolina (population 220,000), has implemented an integrated solution that ties together our enterprise wide asset management (EAM) system, customer service system, and ArcGIS system. Citizens call our Contact Center's one phone number, 373-CITY, to find answers to questions and initiate delivery of non-emergency municipal services. The Center's staff use a browser based application to access a "knowledge base" of services, interactive maps via ArcIMS and ArcSDE and seamlessly initiate work requests to the EAM system. This web-services based integration allows issues to be reported, dispatched, monitored, and analyzed. Employees locate assets, manage workflow, and analyze trends within a flexible, configurable environment. The departments of Water and Sewer, Transportation, and Solid Waste Collection are using the system with several others to follow.
