The Role of Grid Size Optimization in ArcSDE Performance Tuning
Track: Database Design, Automation, and Management
Author(s): Mark Harley, Bradley Gellerstedt

Most ArcSDE configurations use a grid-based spatial indexing scheme. Grid size parameters are specified by the user for each data layer. Understanding grid characteristics will assist with the proper selection of sizes and levels to optimize system performance. This paper will present the fundamentals of ArcSDE spatial indexing and suggest guidelines for arriving at appropriate grid values. It will also explore the performance implications, showing the results of benchmarks from numerous real-world datasets. Graphs will be included depicting the results of widely varied grid sizes, illustrating ranges of acceptable values and supporting the conclusions derived.
