APFO's Role in Geospatial Data, Past, Present, and Future
Track: Benefit of GIS
Author(s): Brian Vanderbilt, Louise Mathews, Zack Adkins

The primary role of United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Farm Service Agency (FSA), Aerial Photography Field Office (APFO) is to acquire, manage, archive and distribute digital ortho imagery in support of farm programs administered by the USDA-FSA. APFO provides imagery stewardship services for USDA Service Center Agencies (SCA), cost share partners and the general public, including knowledge about data sources, archiving, distribution and support services.

APFO has played a vital role in the management of geospatial data, including imagery and agricultural boundary information, for many years prior to, and through the advent of geographic information systems (GIS) technology. This presentation will cover the transition from the analog to digital geospatial world. It will address acquisition, management, inspection, archiving, and distribution of geospatial data for USDA-FSA agricultural purposes, from the standpoint of past, present, and future practices.
