GIS-based City Master Plan Distributed on CD-ROM

Esri's MapObjects LT Serves as Underlying GIS Technology

Redlands, California--GeoGraphics Srl of Ferrara, Italy, has published on CD-ROM the master plan of Comune di Meda, a community near Milan. The product uses a geographic information system (GIS)-based map viewer built with Esri's MapObjects LT software in a Microsoft Visual Basic (VB) environment.

Comments Massimo Calzolari, marketing director at GeoGraphics, "This tool provides an up-to-date, easy-to-use computer-based catalog of all maps and related regulations of Comune di Meda to people, such as designers and architects, who need to know how the territory is regulated. These professionals are typically not computer experts and they need a GIS-based tool that can be easily installed and operated. MapObjects is particularly good for creating applications such as this because it allows the fast access and display of maps, and any good VB developer can easily build a variety of interfaces around it."

The software allows the user to display a number of mapping themes including zoning, cadastral, and parcels, as well as related labels. Tools provide panning and zooming capabilities, map scale selection, parcel specification, and the display of a variety of information related to zoning regulations, parcel identification, and city regulations. In addition, the maps can be printed on any printer-plotter with any paper format and orientation. There is also an online help guide.

The CD is sold at a price lower than that of hard-copy maps and blueprints and many hundreds of the CDs have already been sold. GeoGraphics is in contact with other cities that would like a similar product developed for their own communities.
