Abstract

Using GIS to Predict Accidents and Reduce Response Time
Track: EMS, Fire, Disaster Management
Author(s): Heino Sørensen, Rasmus Holm Jensen, Torben Ruberg

Response time is one of the most important factors in any emergency medical service. The spatial distribution of accidents in relation to the placement of emergency stations is an important factor when trying to reduce response times. By analyzing actual accident data using GIS and statistical tools, it has been shown that a dynamic re-allocation of emergency medical vehicles (EMVs) to areas with a high probability of accidents will result in reduced response times. Falck Denmark is currently implementing a GIS-based system providing real-time management and dispatch of EMVs. The system provides the dispatcher with easy-to-use GIS-based tools for management, re-allocation, drive-time coverages, and dispatch of individual vehicles.
