AbstractIntegrate Wireless and Voice Recognition with GIS Mapping Track: Transportation and Logistics Author(s): Dave Rossbach, Andrew C. Shaw The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) initiated a pilot project to improve the efficiency of reporting of road emergencies and conditions. The pilot project integrates wireless communication, GPS, and voice recognition technologies with Esri's MapObjects Internet Map Server solution to report and display the most updated traffic activities and road conditions. Drivers report emergency incident information or road conditions using voice-activated selection lists or touch screen from their vehicles directly. The data uploaded through the Verizon wireless network is stored in a SQL database. Authorized users can access the information including vehicle location, date, time, incident type, incident details, road conditions, and background mapping on the Web.
