AbstractPreserving Tribal Culture and Language Using GIS Track: Ecology, Archaeology, and Conservation Author(s): Frank Roberts, John Hartman The Names-Places Project is a collaborative undertaking by the Coeur d'Alene Tribal Elders, the Language Center and the GIS Office. The purpose of this project is to preserve tribal culture by visiting geographic sites and recording video, audio, and still photos of Elders describing the site in both English and Coeur d'Alene languages. GIS allows files to be linked to sites on maps that can be accessed with a "mouse click." Digital video, audio, and still photos of the site are attached to the map. The Tribe has recognized the potential of emerging technologies for archiving, preserving, and presenting cultural information.
