AbstractGIS for the Small Office--How? Track: Federal Government Systems Author(s): Shirley W. Mercer This presentation explores the creation and maintenance of a GIS for the Juneau Mineral Information Center (JMIC), a small Bureau of Land Management branch that conducts mineral investigation in Alaska. The following issues are covered: (1) acquiring, storing, and protecting data; (2) serving data to non-GIS staff; (3) obtaining GIS and cartographic education; 4) getting help when you're on your own; and 5) keeping it simple. The number of small "ArcView-only" offices is growing. These offices are often without the expertise of the GIS staff that is generally employed by large agencies and private industry. This presentation addresses a number of issues that arise in this situation. Shirley W.
