AbstractSan Luis Valley GIS Program--A Project Impact Community Track: Federal Government Systems Author(s): Alfred (Pete) Magee This paper presents the San Luis Valley GIS/GPS Authority (SLV GIS) project. This program is supported by the local governments of Alamosa, Conejos, Costilla, Mineral, Rio Grande, and Saguache in south central Colorado. The San Luis Valley GIS/GPS Authority is tasked with the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of a seamless GIS database in a region greater than 8,000 square miles (14% of Colorado’s landmass). The net result has been to make the San Luis Valley a much more livable region and has brought all of us living in this rural environment much closer despite the geographical distances. This program will provide tools and services to truly show that disaster resistance across this area is a challenge that SLV GIS embraces enthusiastically. The commonality of base coverages and newly generated coverages will ensure the success of GIS utilization over this large and beautiful rural area.
