Making the Transition to ArcView 8--The "Sears Integrated Mapping Module System (SIMMS)" Story

This presentation outlines the conversion of the Sears Integrated Mapping Module System (SIMMS) from ArcView GIS 3.x (Avenue code) to ArcView 8.1 (Visual Basic code). SIMMS is a comprehensive site location analysis and mapping module used by Sears to evaluate potential sites for a number of specialty store formats (dealer, hardware, floor covering, etc.). SIMMS contained a significant amount of Avenue code developed over several years and linked to a number of very large disparate databases. Converting to ArcView 8.1 represented not only a conversion to a more robust system that is much more user friendly and visually appealing to users (who are real estate professionals, not skilled GIS users), but it also provided the opportunity to rethink and reorganize SIMMS and improve functionality.
