AbstractThe American Community Survey: The Key to Reengineering the 2010 Census Track: Census Author(s): Nancy Torrieri Plans are proceeding to implement the American Community Survey (ACS) nationwide and in Puerto Rico in 2003. A key component of the 2010 Census, the ACS is the planned replacement for the 2010 Census long form. The need for more current data than that produced by the decennial census long form, as well as the need for measures of change over time, spurred the development of the American Community Survey in the 1990s. Testing and development of the ACS continues in 2001, as the Census Bureau meets with Congress and key stakeholders to make final plans for its full implementation. Data users nationwide have embraced the potential benefits of the program. Data from the ACS is already being used by policy analysts and planners for a variety of GIS-based applications.
