AbstractNew Urban Area Standards Track: Census Author(s): Joseph Marinucci The Census Bureau redefines the area classified as urban as a result of each decennial census, and the Census Bureau's Geography Division is in the process of finalizing its 2000 urban and rural criteria. These criteria will differ somewhat from the 1990 criteria in order to automate the urban and rural delineation for the country and to accommodate the delineation of a new geographic entity called an urban cluster. Urban clusters will provide a better definition of the urban and rural character surrounding places outside of Census Bureau defined urbanized areas. Technological advancements in the field of geographic information systems (GIS) over the last 10 years will make partial automation of the urban and rural delineation feasible for the first time in history. This session will focus on the 2000 urban and rural delineation and GIS tools necessary to complete the job.
