AbstractMapping Groundwater Contamination on the Internet Track: Environment Management Author(s): James S. Bollinger Significant groundwater contamination exists at DOE's Savannah River Site in western South Carolina as a result of more than four decades of nuclear weapon materials production. The most problematic contaminants include volatile organic degreasers, heavy metals, and radionuclides. A network of approximately 2,000 groundwater wells is being used to monitor groundwater contamination and assess the impact of environmental restoration activities. The resulting groundwater geochemical data is housed in an Oracle database that can be accessed from a powerful new Internet Map Server (IMS) application. Users can select the analyte, time period, location, measurement units, and aquifer unit for data retrieval, and the application does the rest--delivering the data to the desktop in a matter of seconds. This IMS tool is playing a critical part in getting complex environmental data into the hands of environmental professionals and decision makers. James S.
