Abstract

Effective Educational System through GIS
Track: System Implementation for GIS
Author(s): JAYACHANDRA KANNEMADUGU

Education is the basis for Human Resource Development (HRD), which has multiple effects on the utilization of all other resources and infrastructure facilities. With the exponential growth in IT application and digital literacy all over the world and because GIS is the most advantageous visual dimension of the database, the potential for GIS applications is unlimited for all corporate bodies and their management with regard to decision making and optimal planning. Spatial distribution of educational institutions, their connectivity, and their respective attribute information, such as courses offered, student strengths, faculty, facilities, etc., are a few factors that may support the management's efforts to monitor development, to improve the facilities, and to make the educational system more effective. The powerful tools developed in GIS allow links to multiple data formats, and easy updates of attribute information through customized front ends provide the users with a simple method to understand and use. The current paper envisages the application of GIS tools to develop a customized product on a selected area with the prime objective of assessing the educational facilities such as primary schools, upper primary schools, high schools, colleges, technical institutions, and hostels available in the study area and how effective the usage of such a database is for planning and management. The user can easily generate result-oriented automated maps and analysis of various factors on both spatial and nonspatial data using dynamic queries. The GIS packages used in this model are PC ARC/INFO and ArcView GIS for creation of spatial data, linking of attribute data, and analysis.
