AbstractGPS in GIS -- Where Is It and How Do I Find It? Track: Water Distribution, Wastewater, and Stormwater Author(s): Andres Armando Diaz, Roger Diercks This paper represents the use of GPS in building a GIS database. The cities of Washington and Morton, Illinois, have conceded that the old paper and Mylar maps of the past are no longer meeting their current needs. In particular, no one is certain where valves, hydrants, manholes, and the like are located throughout each city. All of this information is stored in someone's memory, rather than in any sort of database. This paper represents the work that goes into collecting these points, mapping them, and then turning them into a new set of maps for public works administrators to utilize in further planning and growth.
