Abstract

ArcInfo GIS for Watershed Management Drainage Morphometry
Track: Water Resources
Author(s): anji reddy mareddy

The objective of the paper is to evaluate ArcInfo GIS for its applicability to derive watershed characteristics and to apply drainage morphometric study. The geographical area selected for this study is typical terrain located in a drought prone area of Andhra Pradesh, India. The methodology adopted for this study is visual interpretation of satellite imagery to prepare all the thematic maps (namely, land use/land cover, hydrogeomorphology, soils, groundwater potential zones) along with a drainage map and a slope map derived from toposheets. The maps are then converted to digital form using AutoCAD exported to ArcInfo software. The results optained from the GIS data analysis using ArcInfo are then integrated with the morphometric data to develop an erosion-intensity map. The concept of map algebra is applied on all these maps in order to develop a composite map that shows the action plan for the sustainable development. It is concluded that ArcInfo can be used more effectively and accurately for the watershed management for sustainable management.
