AbstractFrom Pipe Dream to Product: Producing a Full Color Atlas with Desktop GIS Track: Cartography and Map Production Author(s): Phillip Stiefel Through a case study of Lexington-Fayette County Kentucky, this paper presents how local government internally addressed its mapping needs for emergency services, public works, administrative offices, and the general public by producing a 230-page full-color atlas. The atlas will serve as a tool for governmental entities to better serve Fayette County's urban and rural community of 250,000 citizens. This paper will outline steps taken within all phases including planning and design, data preparation/correction, map production, index creation, exporting of files, professional printing, proofing and editing, project time line, distribution, and cost.
