AbstractGIS for Managing Rail Corridors Track: Transportation and Logistics Author(s): Jim Vanderweide, Jim West This paper will describe the development of a track management system for a Bay Area commuter rail managed by Caltrain. Caltrain is looking to GIS technology as an effective means to inventory and manage information about its 100-mile rail corridor. The GIS will provide Caltrain staff with a variety of tools, including software applications, to access up-to-date mapping data, inventory current track conditions, locate encroaching properties on the rail right-of-way, easily produce corridor segment maps, and easily locate utilities. The Rail Management System is a custom application developed using Visual C++ and MapObjects.
