AbstractPrioritizing Conservation Efforts in the Sierra Nevada Ecoregion Track: Ecology, Archaeology, and Conservation Author(s): Bo Wilmer, Chris Weller The Wilderness Society, together with The Trust for Public Land, has embarked on an exciting proactive strategy for conservation. The goal is to optimally target conservation efforts within a proactive, comprehensive strategy. The approach includes three steps. 1. Identify "hotspots" of biodiversity and wilderness. 2. Associate costs of conservation. 3. Run the SITES model. Based on the ecological/wilderness values targeted in Step 1 and the associated costs identified in Step 2, this optimization algorithm iterates through a grid of equal-area planning units to group individual units into a spatial pattern that best achieves wilderness protection for the least cost (spatially explicit annealing).
