AbstractWeb-Based Applications Track: System Implementation for GIS Author(s): Robert McLaughlin Just a few years ago, using GIS data required a dedicated high-end workstation, complicated software, and a lot of technical savvy. Today, the power of GIS can be as close as a PC that's connected to the Internet. Accessing GIS data through Web technology has dramatically enhanced ways in which an organization distributes, uses, and analyzes GIS data. GIS software vendors such as Esri provide tools to turn a common Web browser, such as Internet Explorer or Netscape, into a powerful but easy-to-use GIS tool. This paper will introduce the tools, the processes, and the benefits of implementing a GIS Web site.
