AbstractA Customized GIS and Relational Database for Field Ecology Programs Track: Ecology, Archaeology, and Conservation Author(s): Mark G. Becker This paper outlines eBiome, a GIS and database system used in a Columbia University field ecology class called the Summer Ecology Experience for Undergraduates. Students collect ecological data in the field and enter their findings into a FileMaker database program containing a series of 12 different tables describing such ecological attributes as Species Presence and Forest Profiles. Students import this data into an ArcView application called eBiome Explorer for spatial analysis. The paper describes the development of the program, database/GIS integration, and the creation of training materials to assist students and instructors with the use of the program. Mark G.
