AbstractPredicting NW Forest Stand Structural Characteristics Using Multi-Return LIDAR Track: Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management Author(s): Mike Renslow Multi-return LIDAR (LIght Detection And Ranging) provides a methodology for measuring the bare earth and the structural characteristics (canopy height, volume, and basal area) of the vegetation cover. The motivation for LIDAR mapping is to greatly reduce field efforts and derive high-quality biomass and landscape data of great value to NW forestland managers. This paper presents an overview of LIDAR sampling and data characteristics in a typical NW commercial forest (predominantly Douglas Fir) and the techniques used to derive the key structural characteristics. Graphics and operational examples are presented using ArcView GIS with the 3D Analyst and ArcView Spatial Analyst extensions. Mike Renslow Spencer B.
