Lombard GIS technology has been widely adapted by planning departments at various levels of government. However, this technology has not penetrated economic development marketing and business assistance activities to the extent that its capabilities are widely understood and used. Only recently have business applications of GIS technology begun to appear. These applications are generally geared to improving marketing and business development activities in real estate and retail activities. This paper reviews selected GIS applications in economic development and provides examples of customized GIS applications that enhance economic development marketing and business assistance activities.
