AbstractThe $25 Million Map: GIS's Role in Trails Planning Track: Transportation and Logistics Author(s): Nancy Church A referendum was placed on the ballot last November 7 asking the citizenry of Seminole County, Florida, to voluntarily tax themselves to the tune of $25 million. These funds would be utilized to add to an already significant Trails and Greenways Program currently in place. The plan is to make "safe connections" to and between schools, parks, existing and proposed natural land areas, and neighborhoods. This multijurisdictional initiative involves not only the County but our seven member municipalities and the local Water Management District. GIS has been utilized in a number of ways to facilitate the master planning for this initiative, analyzing socioeconomic factors, transportation corridors, and locations in regard to proximity to schools and other critical facilities. In addition, GIS was utilized extensively as a marketing tool, preparing a wide variety of planning maps for public meetings and presentations, for grant submission for matching funds, and for deployment to the Web. The County GIS staff is thrilled to be doing its part in making sure Seminole County lives up to its motto, "Florida's Natural Choice."
