AbstractDescribing the United States Local Public Health System with GIS Track: Health and Human Services Author(s): John F. Stinn, Robert Gerzoff, Pomeroy Sinnock Previous efforts to describe the U.S. Local Public Health System have attempted to classify government agencies based on several different "case definitions" of local public health departments. These approaches, while simplifying the complex network of various government and private organizations, can lead to an incomplete assessment of the local public health system. The CDC's Public Health Practice Program Office has begun describing public health entities based on location, jurisdiction, and areas of responsibility. This paper explores the issues that led to the development of this more detailed approach and how the CDC collects and shares this information using GIS/Internet technology. John F.
