Abstract
Map Design with ArcGIS: The AAA Experience, So FarTrack: Cartography and Map Production

AAA is an organization with a long history of producing maps for the motoring public. Over the years, the need for automating the mapmaking process grew from the simple digitizing of paper maps as part of a CAD-based system to the current centralized GIS environment. This paper addresses the use of ArcMap for map design and compilation and the challenges we face in using it for map production. It describes our experience using the application and how it has enhanced our map design process. It will also address the challenges posed by the adoption of ancillary Esri technologies, such as ArcSDE and Maplex, in a cartographic production environment.
