AbstractMaking Open Space and GIS Accessible to Local Communities Track: State and Local Government Author(s): Lenny Librizzi, David LaShell This presentation will describe a cooperative effort of nonprofit open space and environmental organizations; City, State, and federal agencies; and corporations that produced an interactive mapping and data analysis application via the Internet to enhance the stewardship of open space in New York City. A linchpin of this cooperative is a project supported by Esri staff to train teachers, community gardeners, and representatives of community-based organizations in the use of ArcExplorer and Excel. Community residents now have access to the tools to make informed decisions about community development supported by data collected and displayed on self-produced GIS maps.
