Abstract(Panel Discussion) GIS Techniques in a Park Management System Track: Environment Management Author(s): Michael Petrakis, Kostas Kartalis, Basil Psiloglou The preservation of the ecosystem's balance was the main aim of the PRIMAVERA EU Research Project study by the Institute of Environmental Research and Sustainable Development, National Observatory of Athens. For the better management and monitoring of the Park, new technologies, such as satellite observation and GIS, were incorporated in a system designed for the assessment of interaction between human activities and balance of the ecosystem. A GIS platform with temporal and spatial monitoring of several parameters, such as land use, vegetation index, road path network, forest fires risk, fire extinction difficulty, and erosion vulnerability risk, provide the park manager with the indispensable tools for the management of the area.
