AbstractIntegrating Environmental Management Information Systems in Urban Planning and Management Track: Environment Management Author(s): Bernd Decker The Environmental Management Information System (EMIS) is a tool for collecting, organizing, and applying information relevant to urban environmental planning and management (EPM). It is designed to assist cities in clarifying issues, formulating strategies, implementing action plans, monitoring progress, and updating changes, using mapping and geographic information systems as essential components for presentation, analysis, and modeling. The Sustainable Cities Programme (SCP) developed an operational tool for an EMIS at the city level. The EMIS is applied in China, the Philippines, Tanzania, Egypt, Nigeria, and others. The tool supports cities in developing up-to-date basemaps, thematic maps on environment and development issues, and environmental management frameworks. Esri has supported this initiative by providing discounts on GIS software ArcInfo and ArcView GIS. Bernd Decker UNCHS (Habitat) P.O.
