Abstract

GIS Support for Exploring Alternative Development Futures
Track: State and Local Government
Author(s): Richard E. Klosterman

This presentation describes What if?, an easy-to-use tool that uses GIS data to create alternate development scenarios and to project future land use patterns and associated population and housing trends. What if? is designed to be used by nontechnical people in public forums, allowing communities to use currently available GIS information to support community-based dialog and collaborative decision making. It is particularly useful for quickly and easily determining the likely outcome of public policy choices such as the expansion of public infrastructure or the implementation of alternative land use controls.
