AbstractGIS-Aided Assessment of the Health of NOAA's Observing Networks Track: Climate and Weather Author(s): Helen V Frederick The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) relies on its various observing networks to gather and report climate, oceanic, and terrestrial data. A project currently under way at the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) utilizes GIS technology to support a Web-based search mechanism for assessing the health of NOAA's observing networks. By allowing users to query spatial coverage and proximity combined with data quality assessment and station history, network managers are able to identify problem areas while researchers are able to select highest quality stations. This paper discusses the integration of NCDC's existing metadata and inventory information with more complex GIS-aided querying abilities to build a useful assessment tool.
