Abstract
Digital Map of the Baltic Sea Region (MapBSR)

The MapBSR project provides a basic digital map data set for the Baltic Sea Region in the scale of 1:1 million. The elements included in the database are administrative boundaries, hydrography, transport, settlements, elevation, national parks, and geographical names. The database covers the countries around the Baltic Sea that are connected to the Baltic Sea drainage area. One of the main problems implementing this project was generalization of information. Is this a job for a cartographer, geographer, or GIS specialist? The paper researches the question of whether it is possible to accept unified standards for data generalization in the territories of different landscapes.
