AbstractPlanning for Sustainable Military Training Ranges Using GIS Track: Defense and Intelligence Author(s): Ryan Christopher Heitz, John Pitcher Sustainable military training ranges require planning for compliance with environmental laws while maintaining a realistic training environment. A model of GIS database and application development to support analyses of range operations in the context of hydrologic, geologic, atmospheric, and ecologic environments is presented. San Clemente Island, 68 nautical miles west of San Diego, is a critical training area for naval forces but is constrained by endangered species, marine mammals, and cultural resource sites. ArcView and ArcInfo were used to generate a GIS database, perform spatial queries, and create maps for planning and assessing the environmental impacts of military range operations.
