AbstractGIS in the Local Exploitation of a Greek Island Track: Environment Management Author(s): Chris Chalkias, Michael Petrakis, Bill Psiloglou The study of the human impact, mainly from tourism, on the environment of the Aegean island of Mykonos was the main objective of a project undertaken by the Institute of Environmental Research and Sustainable Development of the National Observatory of Athens and financed by the EU and the Greek Government. Geographic, statistical, and environmental data have been collected, processed and incorporated in an integrated system. Advanced analysis of the data using modern tools such as GIS, DTM, and remote sensing techniques, provides the local administration and scientists with a user-friendly decision support system for the sustainable development of the island.
