AbstractGIS and GPS: Tracking Personnel in Real Time for Safety Track: New Technology and Technology Integration Author(s): Jesse A. Scott The City of Columbus is implementing a tracking system for inspectors in the field. The system integrates GIS, GPS, Cellular Digital Packet Data, and the Internet. Inspectors are equipped with laptops and in vehicle docking stations. Data is transmitted and received over the Cellular Digital Packet Data network and the Internet. The location of each inspector's vehicle is displayed in real time on an ArcView map using ArcView Tracking Analyst. Personnel safety is enhanced when combined with the panic button on 800 MHz radios. Other possible applications include: tracking for 911, EMS, police, fire, snowplows, or other municipal vehicles.
