AbstractDiscovering Patterns in Arson: Using Crime Pattern Theory and GIS Track: Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Author(s): Terry Whin-Yates, Nicole Jung The presentation demonstrates the analytical potential of crime pattern theory for exploring the spatial and temporal distribution of arson. Geographical factors will be examined to determine how motivated offenders interact with their environment and their impact on the distribution of different types of arson within a given area. Additional factors, such as places of potential influence and different "types" of arsonists (gang-related, serial, mentally disordered, for profit, or crime concealment) are considered. The theory, developed at Simon Fraser University, School of Criminology's Crime Prevention Analysis Laboratory (CPAL), will be demonstrated using crimepatterns.com, GIS software developed by CPAL inc.
