Abstract

Validation of the CANESIM Sugarcane Growth Model Using a GIS Within the South African Sugar Industry
Track: Agriculture
Author(s): Craig Jonathan Gers, Erik Schmidt, Carel Bezuidenhout

This paper presents the use of ArcView GIS for validating the CANESIM model at representative agriclimatic regions within the South African sugar industry. The CANESIM model is a water balance sugarcane growth model. A link was established between the CANESIM model and the GIS that allowed the model to be run from within the GIS. Historical aggregate farm yields were collected. This paper presents the CANESIM-GIS link and the results of the comparisons of the simulated and actual farm aggregate cane yields. Results indicate the CANESIM results are statistically significant for three of the four target areas.
