AbstractGIS in Natural Resources Decision-Making at U.S. Navy Installations Track: Ocean, Coastal, and Marine Resources Author(s): Thomas Mayes, Joe Hautzenroder The Naval Facilities Engineering Command Natural Resources Division is assigned the important role of conservation and management of all Navy-owned lands, most of which reside within sensitive coastal areas. Managers utilize GIS to better understand the wide variety of species and habitats known to exist in these areas. In cooperation with other federal agencies, NAVFAC uses GIS for management and protection of wetlands, coral reefs, mangroves, and other unique habitats. Additionally, we are using GIS solutions to perform the difficult task of tracking migratory aquatic species, such as salmon and sea turtles, to assess interactions with open-water operational areas.
