Abstract
Issues in the Development of an Enterprise Esri Solution for the City of Portland

Following the success of the City of Portland's multiplatform Enterprise GIS Hub, the City is in the process of migrating bureau data maintenance environments to an enterprise implementation of Esri ArcSDE 8 data management technology. This solution will enhance the bureau's existing data sets through the application of rigorous business rules, improve bureau data maintenance processes by streamlining with external business systems, and reduce the overall costs of data maintenance. A data replication scheme will instantly make changes to enterprise data available to all City users through a Web-enabled enterprise data warehouse. This paper will evaluate various approaches to extending the ArcGIS 8 system and will discuss the issues in developing an enterprise platform based on Esri technologies.
