AbstractComparing Cities on Borders with a GIS-Based Urban Commonality Index Track: Modeling Author(s): Nanda K. Viswanathan, W. James Hettrick, James B. Pick This paper presents a GIS-based commonality index in comparing the eight major U.S.-Mexico border cities. Cluster analyses, based on 16 standardized economic and sociodemographic attributes, were conducted for combined metropolitan area coverages, consisting of Mexican and U.S. census small area units. The commonality index draws from the cluster patterns to summarize the extent of overlap or separation of urban characteristics on the two sides of the border. Graphic and GIS analysis allow fine-dimensioned comparison of the eight cities along the border. Urban planners and others seeking refined urban spatial comparisons of groups of border cities will find this approach useful. Nanda K.
