AbstractGoing with the Flow: GIS Implementation at a Small Municipal Utility Track: System Implementation for GIS Author(s): Michelle Hope Pierce Over the past decade, GIS implementation has grown from being an expensive process to being the development of a necessary tool for utilities. Most medium to large utilities have aggressive implementation projects under way or have gone through the implementation process and have established GIS programs. While all implementation projects are faced with problems, small utilities are faced with different types of GIS implementation issues. The City of Colton Utilities Department is comprised of the uncommon mix of electric, water, and wastewater divisions. The mix of the different utilities, the small size of the municipality, and the advancements and subsequent changes in technology have created a challenging GIS implementation project for the Utilities Department. This presentation will discuss the lessons learned from the implementation process, the benefits gained from GIS implementation, and how "going with the flow" can help keep the process moving in a forward direction.
